Knowledge

Cotton is one of the most important fibers and cash crops. It is playing a dominant role in the industrial and agricultural economy of the country. Cotton is growing chiefly for its fiber which is used in the manufacture of cloth for mankind. It is also used for several other purposes such as making threads for mixing with other fibers and for extraction of oil from cottonseed. All these uses give a high industrial value to this crop, and as such a handsome remuneration to the growers. Cotton is a soft, staple fiber that grows in a farm known as a boll around the seeds of the cotton plant (Gossypium sp.), a shrub native to tropical and subtropical regions around the world. Successful cultivation of cotton requires a long frost-free period, plenty of sunshine.

The Role Of Elements

Cotton crop is one of the most important field crops .It is an important export manufacturing crops and cotton crop was affected by potassium deficiency and the most important roles of potassium on cotton crop: -

  • Potassium is one of the most important nutrients that have a relationship to maintain the increase of rank and increases quality specification.
  • Increases opening flowers and bolls with large size and early maturity.
  • Get high quality of fiber.
  • Reduces pests and raise the resistance of plants to fungal diseases.

One of the most important functions of phosphorus on cotton crop as following:

  • Improve plant growth and yield.
  • Improve root growth and distributions.
  • Increasing tillering, number of flowers and bolls in the plant.
  • Increase weight and size of seeds.
  • Increased protein and fat content in seeds.
  • Early maturity of crop.
  • Helps the plant to adapt to environmental stress.

The role of calcium in cotton crop:

  • Increased growth strength and root.
  • Increasing the percentage of flowering and bolles set.
  • Necessary in formation flowers.

Deficiency Symptoms

K

Initial symptoms of potassium deficiency appear in the form of yellowish white spots between the veins on the lower leaves and the affected tissues die at the centers of the spots. At the same time burns appear at the tops of the leaves and around the edges between the veins and breaks the peaks and edges also show symptoms of shortages also in:-

  • Low vegetative growth.
  • As the deficiency progresses, leaves turns yellowish brown and falls.
  • Stem growth stops and lateral branches.
  • Bolls growth and opening stops yield and fiber decreases.
  • Plants become more susceptible to insect and fungal diseases.

P

Phosphorus deficiency Symptoms on cotton crop shows on old leaves in the form of scarlet or purple- color:

  • Low plant growth and low yield.
  • Low flowering and the number of bolls in the plant.
  • Inability of plant to environmental stress.
  • Plants become more susceptible to fungal diseases.

Ca

  • Dryness of shoots tips and roots.
  • Dead spots on the leaves occur.
  • Poor flowering and bolles set.
  • The top of leaf takes the hook shape.
  • Deformation of young leaves.
